Alpha Youth Invitation
The Parish Assembly is issuing an invitation to our young people, particularly to 1st and 2nd year Secondary Pupils – those who were candidates at our last Confirmation in 2016. We would also welcome any other young people to next Wed night’s presentation as detailed below.

Alpha-Youth is a contemporary exploration of the Christian Faith that is being used by groups all around the world to help young people explore the character and claims of Jesus. Over a series of interactive sessions Alpha-Youth looks at topics from ‘Who is Jesus?’ and ‘Why did Jesus die?’ to ‘How & why should I read the Bible?

Greetings from Kenya It’s hard to believe that on Christmas Day I will have been back in Kenya three months. I’m not going to lie and say it has been the easiest three months but I am slowly getting used to living in a different culture again, I’m slowly getting in to my new job as vocation director and most of all I’m realising how grateful I am for the time I spent with you all in Ireland. It was a time of great blessing and somehow I still believe that I am called to bring all those blessings that you gave me to share them with those I meet here in Kenya.
I once again humbly ask for your continued prayers as I pray for all of you. I pray at this special time, as we celebrate once again Jesus’ coming among us, he may bring you and all those dear to you: Peace, Grace and a Deeper Knowledge of God’s Love.

KILBRITTAIN UNDERAGE GAA
The Underage social on Saturday 13th was a great success, thanks to all who attended and who provided the lovely refreshments for the night. Congratulations to all the members who received their medals and certificates and got their photos taken.
2018 registration will take place on Thursday 25th January 7-8pm in the meeting room.

KILBRITTAIN GAA
The €16,800 jackpot was won on Sunday night last. The numbers drawn were 4, 6, 7, 9. the winning ticket was Nina & Aya Healy. Coffee morning in aid of the Hyperbaric Chamber, in Bandon Town Hall on Tuesday 13th February from 10 AM to mid day. Support appreciated.
“The voluntary Bandon Hyperbaric Oxygen Centre (BHOC) has managed to build one of the most sophisticated oxygen-chamber clinics in the world using this new therapy as a means of quickening the healing of a whole range of ailments.
The therapy of administrating pure oxygen under pressure was a treatment pioneered as a result of newly discovered techniques in the aviation, space and diving fields. The chambers were originally used to cure divers of a disease known as the ‘bends’, but medical experts became very interested when they saw the healing effects of pure oxygen on a range of complaints which varied from sports injuries and skin diseases to motor-neuron complaints.”

The Human Touch

Today’s excerpt from the Book of Leviticus doesn’t make for pleasant reading. The constraints placed on lepers and their families seem barbarous to us today. Leprosy, though, was such a contagious and destructive disease that, in the absence of any cure, the first priority was to protect the healthy from contact with it. Moreover, leprosy was also suspected to be a curse or a divine retribution on the sufferer or his/her family and community.

We can barely imagine the effect this had on individual lepers. It didn’t matter how high or low a person’s state was, when he contracted leprosy he was banished to solitary living or the company of other lepers.

The book of Leviticus was written about thirteen centuries before Jesus’ time but the rules laid out in today’s first reading were still being enforced to the letter all those years later The leper came to Jesus under these circumstances seeking healing. Jesus, as we would expect, touched him and healed him.

We can’t heal always but we can always touch. Think what the touch alone meant to the leper who had been without human physical contact all his time as an outcast. We can be sure that if Jesus had done no more than stretch out his hand to touch the leper, without going on to cure him, he would still have lifted the poor man’s heart by showing him that somebody loved and cared for him and let him forget he was an outcast.

Don’t grieve at your helplessness in the face of somebody’s illness or misfortune. Instead, thank God that he has put you where you can reach out and touch.

Kilbrittain Tidy Towns in conjunction with Teresa McEoin of Voice Ireland present a Recycling Workshop Tuesday 27th Feb @ 8.30pm
Voice Ireland is an environmental charity that empowers individuals and local communities to take positive action to conserve our natural resources. Together with Repak, The Dept of Communications and The Dept of Climate Action and Environment have launched a programme of Presentations/Workshops to help people improve Ireland’s recycling rates and reduce levels of contaminants in household recycling bins. Up to 30% of what goes into the domestic recycling bin is not suitable or is contaminated. The presentation takes approximately 30 minutes and the message is simple. “What goes into the recycling bin and what doesn’t”. After the presentation there will be a question and answer session. This is a free workshop and everybody is welcome.

Introducing ‘TowardsPeace’
Towards Peace is a spiritual support service designed for those who have experienced sexual, physical, emotional or spiritual abuse by Catholic Church personnel in Ireland. Support is also available for family members of abuse survivors. The vision of Towards Peace is to provide a safe supportive space, where people who have been affected by abuse in a Church context can be accompanied as they seek their own experience of spiritual peace, one step at a time. Towards Peace provides spiritual support through one-to-one spiritual direction sessions, with a qualified spiritual companion. Up to nine sessions are offered and there is no cost. The World Meeting of Families Icon will visit St. Patrick's Church, Bandon, as part of it's country-wide Pilgrimage. The Icon arrives in our Parish on Friday, March 2nd. Mass will be celebrated at 7.30pm on Friday evening. There will be time for Veneration of the Icon after Mass. Along with the Icon we will have the Diocesan Prayer Petition Box. The box, along with our prayer petitions, will be presented to Pope Francis at the closing Mass of World Meeting Of Families. Bishop Buckley has asked me to write to you concerning the Pro Life Campaign. As you may be aware, members of the Pro Life Campaign spoke to the Priests’ Council last week. The Pro Life Campaign is currently running a programme where they deliver a moderate but life-affirming pro life talk which talks about the 8th Amendment and its protection for mothers and their unborn babies. These are scripted talks which will be given by a female spokesperson for the Pro Life Campaign. Bishop Buckley and the Priests’ Council approved the text and the Pro Life Campaign will be contacting you shortly to seek your permission to arrange for a suitable weekend for the talk to take place in your parish. The Diocese has approved this initiative.

Lourdes 2018–Young Adult Helpers.
The Diocese of Cork and Ross invites Young Adults 18-25 year olds to come to Lourdes as helpers from 11th to 16th June. Each helper is subsidised to the tune of €400 by the Diocese but must pay the remaining €350 of the fare themselves; fare includes accommodation, flights, all meals, coach transfers, insurance and all other costs associated with participating in the group. As helpers you will assist with the sick and be involved in the full pilgrimage programme as well as time for prayer, for making new friends and sharing in the story of Lourdes. Bishop Buckley has asked me to write to you concerning the Pro Life Campaign. As you may be aware, members of the Pro Life Campaign spoke to the Priests’ Council last week. The Pro Life Campaign is currently running a programme where they deliver a moderate but life-affirming pro life talk which talks about the 8th Amendment and its protection for mothers and their unborn babies. These are scripted talks which will be given by a female spokesperson for the Pro Life Campaign. Bishop Buckley and the Priests’ Council approved the text and the Pro Life Campaign will be contacting you shortly to seek your permission to arrange for a suitable weekend for the talk to take place in your parish. The Diocese has approved this initiative.

Two Lives, One Love – pastoral message for 2018 on the right to life
During their Spring General Meeting this week in Maynooth, the Bishops of Ireland reviewed their pastoral message Two Lives, One Love and today publish a revised edition of it as part of their contribution to the national conversation on the right to life:

1. Introduction
Having consulted carefully with members of the lay faithful, both women and men, the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference wishes to offer the following considerations as a contribution to the present national conversation on the right to life.
The Catholic Church recently concluded a Jubilee Year of Mercy. This initiative of Pope Francis was celebrated by the universal Church and it called on us to be open both to God’s mercy in our lives and to ways of being more merciful to others especially those who are vulnerable. While the Constitution celebrates the equality of the mother and the unborn child in its Eighth Amendment, we have an obligation to be at our most compassionate, our most merciful, if and when the expectant mother and father and their unborn child require support during a crisis pregnancy. This support must be more than words. Public resources should be applied in a practical and in a creative way. Supporting and sustaining a culture of life is in the interests of every generation and it defines us as a society.
We believe that human life is sacred from conception until natural death and that Article 40.3.3 reflects the appropriate balance of rights. We ask God’s blessing and guidance on each member of our society in responding to the significant responsibility that we have to defend this right for the present generation and for the generations to come.
Some people argue that the right to life of the unborn should be a matter of personal choice on the part of the mother. Others argue that, while they are opposed to abortion as a general principle, they believe that there are some children to whom the right to life does not apply either because they have been diagnosed with a serious medical condition or because they have been conceived as a result of rape. We wish to state our firmly held belief, based on reason as well as faith, that there is no such thing as a human life without value. We accept, of course, that death is part of our human condition. What we reject is the suggestion that any person can decide when it is time for another person to die.

2. The Right to Life as a Fundamental Personal Right
Article 40 of the Constitution has the heading “Personal Rights” and is situated in a section entitled “Fundamental Rights”. In this way, long before the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was promulgated by the United Nations, the Irish people recognised the fundamental nature of rights such as the right to life, the right to liberty, the right to the privacy of one’s home and the right to freedom of speech.
Fundamental human rights are different from civil rights. While civil rights are the rights given by law to citizens in a particular society, fundamental human rights belong to every person simply because he or she is a person. Fundamental human rights are not “given” by society and they cannot be taken away by society.
Fundamental rights are “acknowledged” in constitutions and charters and “vindicated” in the
application of the law. They are what the United Nations refers to as the “equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family”.¹
Article 40.3.3, sometimes referred to as the Eighth Amendment, reads:
“the State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right”.²
The deletion or amendment of Article 40.3.3, would serve no purpose other than to withdraw the right to life from some categories of unborn children. To do so would radically change the principle, for all unborn children and indeed for all of us, that the right to life is a fundamental human right.
During the current debate some have argued that abortion itself is a human right. We see this view as being inconsistent with an integral understanding of human rights. We would point out that the European Convention on Human Rights requires that “everyone’s right to life shall be protected by the law”.³ The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child defines a child as meaning “every human being below the age of eighteen years unless, under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier”. No distinction is made between born and unborn children.⁴
We invite your attention to a number of aspects of Article 40.3.3, which we believe to be significant:
 In this Article, the State does not concede the right to life to the unborn, but acknowledges that right as a fundamental right, which belongs to the unborn by virtue of his or her being a person. A person is an individual member of the human family, to use the description given in the Preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
 Article 40.3.3 describes the right to life of the unborn as “equal” to the right to life of the mother. It quite rightly does not place the right to life of the unborn above that of the mother.
 Article 40.3.3 does not guarantee, in all circumstances, to be able to defend and vindicate the right to life of the unborn, any more than it can in the case of people who are born and living in our towns and villages. The State does, however, guarantee to respect the right to life of the unborn in its laws, just as it does in the case of other persons.
The right to life is unique, of course, because, in the absence of that right, no other civil or natural right can be exercised, either now or in the future.

3. The Unborn as Persons
We would ask you to consider carefully the reality of what happens in the life of each human being, between conception and birth. There is no moment as developmentally significant as the moment of fertilisation, in terms of defining the beginnings of personal existence. There is no logical or scientific basis for considering, on the one hand, a born child to be a person with all the rights that this involves and, on the other hand, an unborn child to be a non-person. The distinct identity of a human individual is already present once fertilisation has taken place. Everything else is simply the process of growth and development of a person who has already embarked on the journey of life.
For us, as Christians, there is no conflict between faith and reason. Just as reason leads us to recognise the continuity of every human life, from fertilisation to natural death, so faith allows us to see each person as having his or her origins in the intention of God and his or her fulfilment in eternal life. This belief, expressed in various ways in the Bible, is presented very beautifully by Pope Francis in his 2016 publication The Joy of Love. He says:
“The gift of a new child, entrusted by the Lord to a father and a mother, begins with acceptance, continues with lifelong protection and has as its final goal the joy of eternal life. ….. So great is the value of a human life, and so inalienable the right to life of an innocent child growing in the mother’s womb, that no alleged right to one’s own body can justify a decision to terminate that life, which is an end in itself and which can never be considered the “property” of another human being.”⁵

4. The Power of Language
We wish to refer briefly to the use of language with reference to unborn children. Words like “foetus” and “embryo” and “zygote” have specific technical meanings. We question why, in public discourse, healthy unborn children are always referred to as “the baby” while those who, in the opinion of some, do not measure up to expectations are routinely defined as the “foetus” or the “embryo”. We are concerned that language is being used with the intention of depersonalising certain categories of unborn children in a way which seeks to normalise abortion.

5. The Positive Effects of Article 40.3.3 – A Culture of Life
Many thousands of Irish people are alive as a direct result of the enactment of the Eighth Amendment, who might otherwise never have been born. This is partly because there was an inevitable interval between the thought of having an abortion and that thought being put into action. That interval allowed women, often with the support of family members, partners or pregnancy care agencies such as our own Cura, to consider other, more constructive, options.
Quite apart from the numbers of lives that were saved as a result of Article 40.3.3, expectant parents who experience a crisis pregnancy have been culturally supported in making the decision in favour of life and in avoiding a decision which many of them may have regretted afterwards. This cultural support was not simply in the fact that Irish society had made a public statement of principle about the right to life, but also because the structures of society, including healthcare facilities, were not deployed, as they are in many countries, to promote or facilitate the taking of life as an appropriate social response to crisis pregnancy.
The goal of good maternal care would be to achieve a maternal mortality rate of zero. Sadly this is practically impossible because there are some potentially fatal medical conditions related to pregnancy which cannot easily be predicted for individual women. According to the most recent figures, published by the World Health Organisation in 2015, the maternal mortality rate for Ireland is 8 per 100,000 live births.⁶This places Ireland in the lowest, or best, category (number 26 out of 190 countries, and consistently ahead of the United States and the United Kingdom, where abortion is readily available).

6. What abortion is and what abortion is not: the Catholic Church’s teaching
Some of those who advocate deleting or changing Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution, have made it clear that they wish to make abortion available on demand in Ireland. Others say that they are
opposed to abortion in general, but would want to see it permitted in certain difficult circumstances. We do not share that view, because we believe that every unborn child, irrespective of his or her medical condition or the circumstances of his or her birth, has the right to be treated equally before the law.
We are concerned that some elements of the Catholic Church’s teaching on the right to life tend to be presented inaccurately:
 The Catholic Church has never taught that the life of a child in the womb should be preferred to that of a mother. By virtue of their common humanity a mother and her unborn baby have an equal right to life.
 Where a seriously ill pregnant woman needs medical treatment which may, as a secondary effect, put the life of her baby at risk, such treatments are always ethically permissible provided every effort has been made to save the life of both the mother and her baby. Abortion, by contrast, is the direct and intentional destruction of an unborn baby and is gravely immoral in all circumstances. It is not a medical treatment.
 When, sadly, a baby dies naturally in the womb before birth, there is no question of the mother being obliged to proceed with the pregnancy. There is now only one “patient”, the mother. The mother becomes the sole focus of any medical care that is required. Along with the father, the mother is entitled to the best pastoral care that we can offer, as they grieve the loss of their child.
In the confined context of the debate around the Eighth Amendment, it is important to address difficult cases such as those of children with life limiting conditions; and children conceived as a result of rape, neither of which justifies a change in the basic law:
a) Children with Life Limiting Conditions
It is very distressing for a mother to discover that the baby in her womb is seriously ill and, in all probability will not live. Her dreams and hopes are dashed. She grieves for the child that she will never have. She struggles to tell others of the loss that faces her. The grief of the father is no less real. Children with life- limiting conditions are frequently spoken of as if they were “as good as dead”. The use of words like “fatal” or “lethal” to describe these conditions implies that there is something definite about the outcome and that death is imminent and inevitable. The reality is that every case is different and that, while some babies will die before birth, and some will live for just a few hours, others will live for significantly longer.⁷
Many of us have met parents whose children have been born with life-limiting conditions. They have told us about the support they needed to deal with this very difficult situation. They have emphasised how important it was for them to have the memory of doing the best they could for their sick child. They have spoken about how helpful it has been to them to have had the possibility of holding and caring for their child for a few hours or even for a few minutes, until death naturally occurred. Others have told us about their joy in discovering after birth that, while their child did have serious health issues, the prognosis was actually far better than they had originally been given to understand. May we encourage you to listen to their own stories on the websites www.onedaymore.ie and www.everylifecounts.ie.
Even taking the worst case scenarios, the situation of an unborn child with a life-limiting
condition is comparable to that of a born child or adult at an advanced stage of terminal illness. One of the particular challenges facing parents of unborn children with life-limiting conditions is the lack of coordinated support for them. We believe a lot more needs to be done to provide appropriate perinatal hospice services, which offer warmth, tenderness, nutrition and hydration and, in that way, support parents in caring for their sick children until natural death. This, rather than the repeal of Article 40.3.3, should be the focus of government policy and it is something towards which we can and should all work.
b) Children conceived as a result of rape
Rape is an act of violence and a crime. A woman who has been raped needs compassionate care and support. Under such circumstances one can scarcely begin to imagine the physical and emotional stress facing the expectant mother. Society has a moral duty to support her and to do so with the utmost compassion.
A child conceived following rape is also a person. He or she has rights, including that most fundamental of all rights, the right to life. Society must similarly extend its support to the unborn baby.
Some people respond to crisis pregnancy by proposing abortion as a solution. It may even seem like the compassionate thing to do. But these children are innocent and they are entitled to the best support and care that we can provide.

7. Women, Men, and Unborn Children
The relationship between a mother and her unborn child is not simply physical and biological, but emotional and even spiritual. To hurt her child goes against everything that a mother is. We are aware that there are many factors which may influence the decision to have an abortion and that, in many cases, it is a painful and even shattering decision. The emotional and spiritual wound may take a long time to heal.
There is a regrettable tendency to associate abortion exclusively with women who have had abortions. The clear teaching of the Church is that those who promote, organise and carry out abortions are just as responsible and, in some cases, more responsible. Often the destructive act carried out against the unborn child is compounded by the failure of key individuals or institutions to support the mother in recognising and choosing other possibilities.
We understand that some people, including men themselves, feel that men have no contribution to make to this debate. With due respect and sensitivity to the unique role of the mother who carries the unborn child in her womb, we would want to say very clearly that fathers are also parents, with all the responsibility that this involves. Similarly, when it comes to the right to life, men like women have a responsibility, which cannot be abdicated, to defend unborn children who have no other voice.
Pope Francis, in line with comments made by Pope Saint John Paul II, recently wrote:
“I wish to restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life. In the same way, however, I can and must state that there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father.”⁸
As a Church, for over forty years, through Cura’s professional counselling service, we have been supporting expectant mothers and fathers who find themselves facing a crisis pregnancy. Our hope is for a Church and a society which, while rejecting abortion, reaches out to women who have had an abortion, with a listening ear and an understanding heart. Most of all, we believe that the common good is best served by a Church and a civil society which, while rejecting abortion, continues to offer women real alternatives and real support.

8. Conclusion
Living as we do, in a culture which places such a high value on individual rights, it may seem strange that the most fundamental personal right of all, the right to life, is increasingly being questioned and denied. The problem seems to be that, when respect for the rights of the individual is pushed to the extreme in a society, the result is just another form of individualism in which all rights, even the most fundamental of rights, become relative. As Pope Saint John Paul said: in such circumstances “the ‘right’ ceases to be such, because it is no longer founded on the inviolable dignity of the person”.

9The logical conclusion is that the whole notion of human rights is undermined and any rights that remain depend on the will of the majority.
Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution of Ireland (Bunreacht na hÉireann) has a particular vision which is based on respect for the right to life of every person. We believe that the deletion or amendment of this article can have no other effect than to expose unborn children to greater risk and that it would not bring about any benefit for the life or health of women in Ireland. We encourage you, therefore, as members of the human family, to work actively towards keeping the right to life in the Constitution, in the name of equality, fairness and compassion for all.

Papal Mass Sunday 26th August
The Diocese has requested each parish to furnish them as soon as possible with the numbers of people intending to go as part of parish groups, as tickets for these travellers are being allocated by Dublin now. Parish Assembly needs to know who would be interested in going if the parish were to organise a bus or buses for this occasion. Because of pressure from Dublin and a possible high demand for buses from other parishes, the deadline for names is Sunday next, 8th April, accompanied by a deposit of €20, fully refunded if we haven't enough to consider it worthwhile going as a parish group.
One thing to bear in mind is that the buses will be parked 5km from the Phoenix Park, that's up to an hour's walk for most people. The information that we have is that there will be shuttle buses for those with mobility issues, but the Dioceses can't say how limited or otherwise the service will be. I don't imagine that people will be turned away easily from shuttle buses on the day, but we don't know that. Also, there will be no seating available for anybody in the Park, people are expected to take folding chairs if the have to sit as we did in 1979 for the visit of Pope St John Paul II.

Papal Mass Sunday 26th August
The Diocese has requested each parish to furnish them as soon as possible with the numbers of people intending to go as part of parish groups, as tickets for these travellers are being allocated by Dublin now. Parish Assembly needs to know who would be interested in going if the parish were to organise a bus or buses for this occasion. Because of pressure from Dublin and a possible high demand for buses from other parishes, the deadline for names is this Sunday, 8th April, accompanied by a deposit of €20, fully refunded if we haven't enough to consider it worthwhile going as a parish group.
One thing to bear in mind is that the buses will be parked 5km from the Phoenix Park, that's up to an hour's walk for most people. The information that we have is that there will be shuttle buses for those with mobility issues, but the Dioceses can't say how limited or otherwise the service will be. I don't imagine that people will be turned away easily from shuttle buses on the day, but we don't know that. Also, there will be no seating available for anybody in the Park, people are expected to take folding chairs if the have to sit as we did in 1979 for the visit of Pope St John Paul II.

Permanent Deacons
Bishop Buckley invites applications from men interested in serving as Permanent Deacons in the Diocese of Cork & Ross. The first two permanent deacons in our diocese were ordained last October, and are now serving in city parishes. One man is in his final year of training and is due to be ordained as Deacon later this year.
Applicants should have a good knowledge of the Gospel, a well established spiritual life, and a willingness to serve others, even at some personal cost. The minimum age for ordination as a permanent deacon is twenty-five years for a celibate man, and thirty-five years for a married man. The maximum age is sixty years. While married men may be ordained, deacons who are widowed may not remarry.
Deacons continue in their family lives and secular employment. The four-year programme of preparation is part-time, as is the subsequent ministry. Initial contact should be as soon as possible as the application process must be completed in June for a course of preparation beginning in September 2018. It is probable that a course will not commence again in Munster until 2021.

A huge Thank You to all who helped out, dropped in food, called in and in so many other ways supported the Tea/Coffee day in support of Cork Penny Dinners and the Simon Community. The fantastic amount of €1,664 has been realised so far and this will be divided equally between these two charities. Additional charities received the knitting/crochet work produced by the local group and many, many others in their own homes during the winter – the Neo Natal Unit in CUMH, the Simon Community, Blankets for Cancer patients – and the left-over food was sent to Cork Penny Dinners. Pastoral Area Masses
As in last summer, the priests of the neighbouring parishes in our area (Bandon, Enniskeane, Kilbrittain and Murragh) have drawn up a schedule of Masses which will both allow for a summer break for each priest and ensure that each parish has Masses at the weekends and for the Holyday in August. This involves a slightly reduced number of Masses in the parishes and also involves the priests circulating between the churches to offer Mass. The rota will partially apply as from June 23rd and will fully apply from Sat July 7th.
Kilbrittain: Our two Masses continue as normal.
Bandon: Saturday evening 7.30pm Mass will cease for the summer after Sat 16th June. Sunday schedule is unchanged.
Enniskeane: The summer schedule begins for Enniskeane on Sat July 7th. They will have two Masses from then: Sat 7.30pm at Enniskeane and Sunday 11am at Enniskeane.
Murragh & Templemartiin: Sat 8pm Mass is discontinued for the summer after Sat June 16th. Sunday Masses as normal.
The 2018 Summer Schedule will be published within a week or so.

Abortion Referendum
Exposing the Elephant in the Room

This is being written on Friday while votes are still being cast but the work of this day – win, lose or draw – cannot but change the nature of the entire game for the Irish Catholic Church. Even in the unlikely event that the ‘No’ prevails by a huge majority, this still leaves us with the reality that hundreds of thousands of Irish Catholics have on 25th May 2018 made themselves part of a force which has as its aim the committing of innumerable murders. And if the push of which they are part succeeds in legalising abortion, these brothers and sisters of ours in Christ will bear on their souls the black stains of murder piling up day after day, not just all the days of their future life but into eternity or until the killing in Ireland which they set in motion comes to an end in the hoped-for time when we become a civililized country again.

Nobody who votes ‘Yes’ today can plead ignorance before their Maker. For once, the Irish Church clearly and repeatedly asserted the message that voting for abortion was not an option for a Catholic, and did so in every one of the almost countless media of communication with which we are both blessed and bombarded each and every day.

So, who is a Catholic in Ireland tonight? Well, every baptised person still is and always will be. No matter what we do, we are always encouraged and welcome to worship as part of the community, both by being physically present and being present in spirit. As Catholics, we will always, in life and in death, be included in the prayers of the Church.

BUT the Irish Catholic Church cannot go on pretending that everybody who turns up for Mass on Sunday, everybody who brings a child for baptism or First Holy Communion, everybody who books a wedding in a Catholic Church is truly in Communion with the Faithful. The Church is catholic, meaning that it holds its truths to be universal and unchanging, and those who strive to live by those truths must be affirmed without fear for the consequences. What sets people like this apart isn’t that they are Saints but that they know, through accepting the Word of God and the teaching of the Church, that they are sinners and they acknowledge their need for the Sacrament of Penance.

Ah, the Sacrament of Penance. One view is that the events of this day began long years ago when some Catholics decided that they weren’t going to go through the embarrassment of confession any more and started to excuse their small sins. Then they started absolving themselves of big sins. Then they decided nothing they did could ever be a sin (but, of course, their neighbours were always sinning)!

I mentioned the existence of Hell last Sunday. I heard with satisfaction and amusement that, on the highways and byways, surprise was expressed by some at news of the reality of that place. I think that was like a GAA supporter asking if there really was such a place as Croke Park!

Kilbrittain Underage GAA
The Kilbrittain Underage GAA Cul Camp is on next week from Tuesday 7th to Friday 10th, 10.00am to 2.30pm each day in the village pitch. We have 127 kids taking part so it will be a busy week, but we expect to have lots of fun as well. Can motorists please be cautious when driving through the village at drop off and pick up times.

“Travel back in time” History Tour
Kilbrittain Historical Society will host an evening trip with a guided tour from the Argideen and along the Strand road presented by Michael Larkin. Tickets are expected to be issued this week. Plans to have tickets identified by name of holder have been dropped. The following was sent during the week to coach organisers, it my have information of value to travellers.

As the coach organiser you will receive an email with tickets to print for each person travelling. We understand now that these will not be name specific but each person on each coach will need to have a printed ticket. These tickets will direct you to a colour coded route to walk to Phoenix Park and then into the corral designated to you for the Mass. Each person travelling may bring a fisherman’s chair or stool to give you a seat for the day (seating is not provided in Phoenix Park). If when you are dropped at the coach park you are on a Dublin bus route you may choose to use the bus to get you to the gates of the Phoenix Park - this bus travel is free on the day with your Papal Mass ticket. Please stress to your group that it will be a long day and travel in and out of Dublin will be slow due to the volume of people/vehicles expected. We believe priority on the roads will be given coaches. The time between leaving your coach parking area and your arrival into the Phoenix Park area designated to your group could be up to 2 hours. Coach stops en-route: some parishes have arranged for stops for food while travelling. We suggest food is pre-ordered so that it is ready for you when you arrive at the restaurant. This is to save time on your journey. No times for leaving Dublin can be given for this day due to the large number of people leaving the park at the same time and then all the vehicles leaving Dublin. It is estimated at present that the time for leaving coach parks is 7:00pm

Opening Ceremony for the World Meeting of Families taking place in our Diocese on Tuesday 21st August at 7:30pm in the Cathedral of Ss Mary and Anne, Cork. Please extend an invitation to all your parishioners to join in prayer on this day. Bishop John Buckley will preside and he has invited Mgr Aidan O’Driscoll to preach the homily.

For this ceremony I am asking if your parish would nominate a family (parent/s & child/children; married couple etc…) to represent your parish and receive a WMOF candle on behalf of your parish which they will bring back to the parish church to be lit for the five days of the WMOF as you pray the WMOF prayer after Mass each day.

Foroige Registration Night
Kilbrittain Foroige Club returns after the summer break on Friday the 21st of September, at 9.30 pm, in the Parish Hall, with registration of existing and new members. As places are limited, we ask all those interested in joining the club for the coming year to attend on the night. A Parent/Guardian must attend on the night with your child. The membership fee of €30 per member or €40 per family will also be collected on the night. There is an increase in the fee for this year. This money goes directly to National HQ. So unfortunately is outside of our control.

The club cannot function without the help of parents. Under new requirements of the Child Protection Laws, all helping parents must be Garda vetted. To facilitate this, we are asking parents to bring at least two forms (and ideally more) of strong photographic IDs, and separate proofs of address on the night. Strong IDs would include passports, photographic Public Services Card, credit card Drivers Licence and home utility bills. Other forms of ID (e.g. old style drivers licence, other letters confirming address) may also be acceptable if three or four forms are presented - we can check them against the National Vetting scoring system to see if the combination of ID's is acceptable or not. Full details, including the scoring system and acceptable forms of ID, are available on the Kilbrittain Foroige Facebook page. Please ring or text Ted at 087/6329290 for further information or any query about suitable forms for vetting. If you were successfully vetted last year then you do not require to be vetted this year.

Recently Eileen Hayes proudly presented a cheque for €6,500 to David O’Brien of Cancer Connect West Cork (which is administered by West Cork Rural Transport). This was the proceeds of the amazing Pop Up Shop which ran for a couple of weeks in early August. Also present were Jack McNulty, Julie Harrington, Gus O’Brien, Con McCarthy, (West Cork Rural Transport) John McCarthy, Corinne Domoney, John Butler, Lucy Butler, Kieran Butler, Eugene Fallon, Mary Hayes and Annette Hickey. We are very thankful to you the community who made this happen. A cheque for €500 was also presented to Kilbrittain Tidy Towns for which we are very grateful. The Cork clubs draw is now up for renewal. Existing members will be contacted in the coming weeks and new members are always welcome. After discussion at Parish Assembly meeting it was decided to assure parishioners, in an effort to encourage wider takeup of Stations, that a simple fare like tea and scones is sufficient hospitality.

Dues Envelopes
It had been getting difficult for many of the regular distributors to find time to commit themselves four times a year to distributing the brown envelopes for support of the priest: Spring and Autumn Dues and Christmas and Easter Offerings. In response, these have been replaced by four white envelopes in the yearly box delivered for 2018. So far, fewer of these have been returned than in the previous system. Some people may not have realised what their function was.

Do This In Memory
This Sunday we welcome the present class of First Holy Communion candidates as a group. We will be privileged to join with them and their parents in promising to help their preparation.

Kilbrittain Scout Troop are having a clothes collection in the Parish Hall next Saturday, 13th Oct, 10.30 am to 4.00 pm. Men’s. Women’s and Children’s clothing, Curtains,Towels and other household textiles, Soft Toys, Shoes, Handbags, Belts. Unfortunately cannot accept: Wet or Dirty clothes, Mats, Carpets, Duvets, Pillows, Laptops or Mobile phones.

Kilbrittain Foroige
Kilbrittain Foroige are taking part for the second year in The Focus Ireland Shine a Light Campaign. This year on October the 12th , Kilbrittain Foroige Club will be sleeping out to highlight the issues surrounding Homelessness in Ireland. Focus Ireland in 2017 through their Family Team supported 1,033 families. 387 families were helped out of Homelessness and into homes. Focus Ireland supported 14,500 people who were homeless or at risk in 2017. Dick White of Focus Ireland spoke to our members recently and said €4 in every €10 has to be raised in communities like Kilbrittain. He told the members they were a brilliant group to undertake this project but the day after they return to their homes and comfortable beds but those experiencing Homelessness have to repeat the cycle night after night, day after day. Please lend your support by sponsoring our journey. Donations can be made through donation buckets in The Post Office, The Amber Bar, The Kilbrittain Inn or Co Op. You can also donate to any Foroige Member using their Sponsorship Cards. Anam Cara National Bag Pack 2018
Anam Cara is committed to continue offering all our services at no charge to bereaved parents and families throughout Ireland. Anam Cara’s main fundraising event for 2018 is our national bag pack, once again in conjunction with Dunnes Stores.We are looking for some supportive volunteers who would consider helping us for a couple of hours on Saturday 17th November at Dunnes Stores, Bishopstown between 10am - 6pm.
