6th OCTOBER 2013

27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

NEW WEEKLY BULLETIN
This is the first issue of the Weekly Bulletin. I have found in other parishes that being able to keep people up-to-date on a constant basis with parish and community news is worthwhile for the convenience of the community. The parish has purchased a new Copy Printer which will print the Bulletin and many other parish publications and items of stationery quickly and economically.
Submissions of items about parish, community and charity events would be gratefully appreciated; however, notices of events for private or commercial gain cannot be included. Items can be given or emailed as usual to Denis and Margaret Collins:killeenskilbrittain@yahoo.ie
or to myself: mail@frcremin.com. Deadline for receipt of submissions each week is Thurs night 9.00 pm.
It is recommended that a copy of the Bulletin be kept in each house for the week as a reminder of notices and of the Sunday Scripture.
Fr Jerry Cremin, PP

This is God's work, created with love and it purely seeks to enrich people's faith through, what has always been, a beautiful prayer

WHO ARE THE SAMARITANS?
In today’s Gospel St Luke emphasises that the one grateful leper was a Samaritan. Why is this important? The Samaritans are a Hebrew sect, with their own centre of worship on Mount Gerizim. They continue to exist today. They are descendants of Abraham like the Jews but their Bible is only the first five books of the Old Testament (The Pentateuch). When the Jews of Jerusalem were captured and taken into exile the Samaritans weren’t taken with them.  During the exile of 70 years, and after the return, the Jewish faith underwent many great changes, which were missed out by the Samaritans. So, what was once one Faith had developed along two different roads. As a result there was considerable propaganda against the Samaritans, claiming they were really foreigners who practiced false worship.  The true goodness and gratitude of the Samaritan leper in today’s gospel shames the Jews who would have looked down on him.  The same message is contained in the parable of the Good Samaritan. (Adapted from Fr Kieran O’Mahony, tarsus.ie)

HARVEST FESTIVAL
Our Mass this weekend begins with an offertory procession of crops and fruit from this summer’s harvest.  The church is decorated from top to bottom with more produce. It should help us to lift up our hearts in thanksgiving and remain as a reminder of our dependence on God for everything in our lives.
One has to see the results to appreciate the planning, the work, the time and the giving which has gone into this display. Thanks to the Liturgy & Celebration group for this mighty achievement.

MISSION SUNDAY
World Mission Sunday was instituted in 1926 by Pope Pius XI and it was to be celebrated in every church in every place, even the poorest, on the second last Sunday of October every year.  More than €2 million was donated by Irish congregations to the Mission Sunday collection in 2012.  As many as 1,100 mission dioceses receive funds to assist projects submitted to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.  These would include providing the bare essentials of life for missionaries; formation of the laity and catechists; building of chapels, churches, community and pastoral centres; refugee projects. 25% of the Mission Sunday collection is given to support the formation and education of priests, brothers and sisters.

Synod Questionnaire
Pope Francis has called a Synod (assembly) of Bishops in 2014 to help better communicate the Christian understanding of the family and its value in society in a convincing manner.
YOU (whether you are a regular mass attendant or not) are being asked to make your contribution to this important reflection on the family by answering a questionnaire on the subject. It addresses various important issues including:
• Are the Catholic Church's teachings on the value of the family understood by people today?
• Natural law is understood as the ability of human beings to discern the difference between good and evil by the power of reason. What place does this idea have among people generally?
 In the current crisis, how have Christian families been able to carry out their vocation of passing on the faith?
 Since many children and young people no longer see their parents receive the sacraments, how can the Church provide a Christian education for them?
 What questions do divorced and remarried people pose the Church concerning the Sacraments of the Eucharist and of Reconciliation?
 What pastoral attention can be given to people who have chosen to live in same sex relationships?
If some of the questions are irrelevant to you or don’t make sense tick the ‘I Don’t Know Box’, or just leave it blank. All the responses will be gathered together to form the basis of the diocesan report that will go to Rome.
Many thanks for taking the time and effort to fill in the questionnaire All questionnaires to be returned by Jan 6th in the box provided in the Church
