VOTING AS CATHOLICS
Voting is a Christian as well as a civic duty.
Those entitled to vote have a valuable opportunity to influence society in a positive way. Elections decide whether Governments favourable or hostile to God's law take on the running of the country or at least they can lead to the entry of worthy individual parliamentarians who can work for the best outcomes. By voting we fulfil a principal duty of Christian citizenship and take responsibility for the co-determination of our society. By not voting we would leave this task to others.
The Catholic Church has always taught that voting is an important duty. This is especially true when issues such as abortion, euthanasia, religious freedom and respect for conscience are likely to form part of the agenda for an incoming Government, as is the case in Ireland today. The recent anti-marriage referendum identified a significant gap between a Catholic's duty to vote in accordance with the common good, enlightened by a faith perspective, and a sense of unrestricted choice. A sizeable number of people either did not vote at all or chose an electoral position at variance with Catholic principles. The harm done in this way cannot be rectified.
In a general election it would not be right that the only things which matter are economic achievements, ideology or party name. All parties profess a general intention of promoting economic prosperity, although the circumstances which allow them to do so are not always under their control. On the other hand, to protect the right to life of the unborn or the terminally ill is within the capacity of a Government if it has goodwill. At present a number of political parties in Ireland openly hold the view that abortion should be extended and that the Constitutional protection afforded by Article 40.3.3. on the Right to Life of the unborn should be removed. This is a strong alert for Catholic voters.

VOTING TO PROTECT THE UNBORN
A Catholic is bound to vote according to his/her conscience and to make sure that the conscience has been fully informed of the teaching of the Church. Many of the candidates who are looking for our votes this month have clearly signified their intention to push for the legalising of Abortion in the next Dáil, or at least are aware that their Party, if they belong to one, will force them to co-operate in promoting this abomination. The following passages from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (Paragraphs 2271 to 2274) may help when assessing the morality of voting for particular candidates.

2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:

“You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.”

God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.

2272 Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offence. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication “latae sententiae,” “by the very commission of the offense,” and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.

The inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutive element of a civil society and its legislation:

“The inalienable rights of the person must be recognized and respected by civil society and the political authority. These human rights depend neither on single individuals nor on parents; nor do they represent a concession made by society and the state; they belong to human nature and are inherent in the person by virtue of the creative act from which the person took his origin. Among such fundamental rights one should mention in this regard every human being’s right to life and physical integrity from the moment of conception until death.”

“The moment a positive law deprives a category of human beings of the protection which civil legislation ought to accord them, the state is denying the equality of all before the law. When the state does not place its power at the service of the rights of each citizen, and in particular of the more vulnerable, the very foundations of a state based on law are undermined.... As a consequence of the respect and protection which must be ensured for the unborn child from the moment of conception, the law must provide appropriate penal sanctions for every deliberate violation of the child’s rights.”

2274 Since it must be treated from conception as a person, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed, as far as possible, like any other human being.

MY VOTES ON FRIDAY NEXT
For those who remember the Referendum on the 8th Amendment to the Constitution it’s hard to believe that that happened almost thirty-three years ago, in 1983. I was reminded of it during the week when somebody remarked on how many children and adults now alive would have never been allowed to be born had this referendum been defeated. The number would be in the thousands, if not in the tens of thousands.
But now we are aware of a serous threat to this protective clause. The next Dail may well use its voice to silence the voiceless, to remove the equal rights of the unborn. That is why I am taking the unusual step of revealing my voting intentions for next Friday:

THERESA HEANEY, Maryboro. A member of the Catholic Democrats Party. Every Catholic should be including Catholic Party candidates among his/her choices.

MICHAEL COLLINS, Schull. Independent. A member of St Joseph’s Young Priests’ Society. He has gone on public record that he is 100% anti-abortion.

The four main parties set out their stalls very clearly last year when they vociferously disobeyed Catholic teaching and the urging of the Bishops by promoting the referendum to do away with marriage. I hope some candidates for those parties are pro-life and would be courageous enough to defy the party whip in a case of conscience. It may be unfair and prejudiced of me not to pick any party candidate but I’m not taking the chance because, while an individual candidate may be trustworthy, their parties certainly are not.

I’m sure I don’t have to say that none of the above chosen candidates has asked me to make this announcement. I didn’t know of their existence and I thought actually that there were no pro-life candidates on our constituency ballot paper until I went searching the net for information to help me make my General Election choices.
GOD SAVE IRELAND!
Fr Cremin

INDUCTION LOOP
Within the last few weeks an induction loop and transmitting technology have been installed in St Patrick’s Church. This system responds to a special setting (marked ‘T’) in most hearing aids. The loop transmits the sound electromagnetically and the hearing aid tunes into this signal, giving a clearer reception than picking up the analogue sound from the church speakers. Please remember to set your hearing aid selector to the ‘T’ position. I’d be pleased to hear any comments, favourable or not, from users.

Official opening of Kilbrittain Garden of Remembrance
On Sunday April 24th at 11:30 a.m. a new Garden of Remembrance will be opened in the heart of Kilbrittain Village to commemorate all those who took part in the historic events of a century ago. Kilbrittain people will pay a particular tribute to the memory of J.J.Walsh of Rathroon, Kilbrittain who fought in the G.P.O. during Easter week, and subsequently went on to become the first Minister for Post and Telegraphs (1923-1927). There will also be a plaque to commemorate the march of the local Volunteers from Kilbrittain and Ballinadee to Macroom in mobilisation for the Rising. The garden centrally consists of a Proclamation stone and seven standing stones, with plaques for each of the seven signatories of the Proclamation.
Proceedings will include a reading of the Proclamation, a flag-raising ceremony, the playing of the National Anthem and other musical performances, and strong input from local clubs and schools. The garden will be opened by Sr. Cora Richardson, the niece of J.J. Walsh. The guest speaker is Mr. Con O' Callaghan (Chairman of Kilmichael/Crossbarry Commemoration Committee).
Refreshments will be served after the ceremony at The Kilbrittain Inn with the theme of ‘food from the era of 1916’. A sincere thanks is due to all those who have volunteered their time, material and skills to this wonderful tribute. We hope that local communities will show their support for this local historical initiative by attending in large numbers. The village will be festooned with buntings on the day and we would love to see individual houses displaying the tricolour or other national emblems. The ceremony will commence at 11.30 a.m.

Eucharistic Adoration
We will have a guest speaker at next weekend’s Masses and there will be an opportunity for people to sign up to add to our team of Eucharistic Adorers.
 One time when Blessed Mother Teresa was visiting America a group of women asked her what they could do to help her in her work. Blessed Mother Teresa replied, "The greatest help they could give her would be to spend one hour each week in silent adoration before the Blessed Sacrament". That is good advice for us too.
 Spending time with Jesus in adoration should not strike us as unusual. It is really a very natural human activity. When two people love each other, they want to spend time together to visit, to get to know each other better. You cannot love someone you do not know. Adoration of our Lord in the Eucharist is your chance to know Jesus better.
(Owing to practice for Confirmation, the first hour of Adoration will be suspended next Wed, with Adoration starting at 3.00 pm.)

RCIA Qualification
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.

As you are aware in the Diocese we offer the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) when adults participate in  weekly sessions over several months in preparation for Baptism into the Catholic Church at the Easter vigil, or for  some people who are already baptised Christians preparation for the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist .  Many of you already have RCIA teams in your parishes who undertake to lead these weekly sessions. Currently we have several people who are seeking initial training or further training to assist them in this parish ministry.

We are planning to offer training to all current members of RCIA teams, those who have been members but have not had enquirers/candidates in recent years, and to our newly commissioned Parish Catechists in partnership with the Maryvale Institute.  It is also open to parish clergy who may wish to participate too.

The Maryvale Institute offers one module leading to the Certificate in RCIA Catechesis which we are now intending to offer in the Diocese.  To undertake the module will involve attending two sessions and then one essay submitted to Maryvale for marking – on completion of the essay and return corrected with grade the certificate will be awarded.

The module has one course book – given at the first session – of nine chapter over 116 pages offering a full explanation of the RCIA process, and how it is facilitated in parishes.

There are two options on offer if you choose to participate in the training module.

Option A:   attend two sessions, submit one essay, receive the Maryvale Certificate in RCIA Catechesis

Option B:   attend two sessions (audit of course only)  no essay, no certificate

The cost of undertaking this module is:  Option A  €60  leading to certificate  (writing the essay)

Option B €50  to audit the course  (no essay – no certificate)

The parish would cover the course fees of those registering to undertake this training  in return for their willingness to engage in the RCIA process in the parish.

The sessions will be delivered in two locations as follows:

CITY AREA:          session one -  Tuesday 13th September   7:30pm to 9:30pm     Turner’s Cross Parish Centre

Child Protection
The Kilbrittain Child and Vulnerable Adults representatives (Michael Coleman, Teresa O'Driscoll, Sally Simpson) regretfully announce that they have stepped down from the role of Parish representatives. In the event of any Child or Vulnerable Adult issues please contact Cleo Yates, Diocesan Officer at 021-4301717. or 087-3768599.
I wish to thank Michael, Teresa and Sally for their very fruitful work in implementing the New Child Protection Policy. Over the last year and a half in particular, they have met with Cleo Yates several time, contacted numerous individuals and organizations within the parish, attended training and dealt with a great deal of paper work. As a result, this parish is to the forefront in compliance. The process of vigilance and and answerability, however, is a never-ending one and I accept that these three generous people have carried the work and responsibility to the limit of their own available time and resources for a voluntary task such as this.
I would be glad to discuss the details of the role of Child Protection Representative, without obligation, with anybody who would like to consider volunteering to play a part in the next group.
Fr Jerry.

A Prayer for the Souls in Purgatory
O Lord, who are ever merciful and bounteous with your gifts, look down upon the suffering souls in purgatory. Remember not their offences and neglectfulness, but be mindful of your loving mercy, which is from all eternity. Cleanse them of their sins and fulfil their ardent desires that they may be made worthy to behold you face to face in your glory. May they soon be united with you and hear those blessed words which will call them to their heavenly home: "Come, blessed of My Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen

By the way ...

... Congratulations to Kilbrittain Junior II Footballers on their victory in the County Final last Saturday. We’re proud to have another County title in Kilbrittain.

... Fr Bernard Murphy has sent us a lovely card to thank us for our hospitality last weekend. (Card is on display on side altar of church.) On a weekend when so much else was happening in the parish – County Final, Underage walk, Foróige pumpkins, Sr Cora’s history talk – it was gratifying to see so many who took the trouble to meet with Fr Bernard. My thanks to the Parish Assembly sub-group who put in so many hours planning for the visit and the generosity of those who provided accommodation and hospitality. The Franciscian Friars of the Renewal, to which Fr Bernard belongs, are a remarkable order. If you have the EWTN Catholic Satellite channel, you have a chance to meet many of this order in various roles.

... Last Friday night we had some 45 families who were bereaved last year uniting with us for our Novena Mass. We appreciate the effort they made to come, including some who travelled from some distance.

Bambinelli Sunday
Bambinelli Sunday is a beautiful tradition that was started by Pope St. John Paul II. Bambinelli is Italian, the plural of bambinello which means "little baby [boy]." Bambinelli Sunday is celebrated on Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent. Thousands of people come to St. Peter's Square bringing the Baby Jesus figurines from their cribs and nativity scenes; then, at the time of the Pope's Angelus address, he blesses all the little figures of the Child Jesus. Following a suggestion from the Diocesan Liturgical Ofice, we hope to bring this tradition to Kilbrittain. On next Sunday week, 11th December (Gaudete Sunday) you are invited to bring the figure of the Baby Jesus for your crib to Mass on Saturday night or Sunday to have it blessed. After the blessing take it home and gift-wrap it until Christmas Eve. Let it be the first Christmas gift you unwrap before putting it in the crib./td>

DISTRIBUTION OF SUNDAY OFFERING ENVELOPES
Last year every house got a random-numbered box and were asked to put their names on at least one envelope during the year if they wanted us to know which number they had been given.
StatisticsIn all, 176 different numbers made their appearance in the collection basket. Of these, 110 can be associated with their donors since the donors put their names on at least one Sunday.
For next year, we have enough boxes again for every household. If you put your name on an envelope this year, you’ll get the same numbered box again. Other people, since we do not know who they are, will be delivered random boxes again.
WE ARE APPEALING for volunteers to deliver set of: 1. Box of envelopes; 2. Calendar; 3. Christmas Offering Envelope to each home in your townland. Thanks to those who have volunteered already.
